“Exploring a different culture is not merely about getting to know others, it is also getting to know yourself better.” Silke Irmscher
Why I do this
I know that many expatriates face quite a few challenges when living and working in Indonesia. Working expats deal with completely different expectations of leadership as well as approaches of how to do a job. Often, they are caught up in a heavy workload and chase through everyday life in order to meet up with the high expectations form the headquarter.
For expat spouses the relocation means a cut into their social and professional life. Friends are left behind at home and their own career is paused or even given up to follow the partner. After arriving in Indonesia, many expat spouses have to deal with a totally different environment and culture, not to forget that a new social network has to be built up from scratch. Since the working spouse is busy in the office (or stuck in the traffic jam to or from it), many feel that they are often left alone with all these challenges. As a consequence, quite a few suffer of unhappiness and frustration.
I believe that understanding the Indonesian culture from inside can help every expat to deal with the cultural challenges everyday. Exploring a different culture is not merely about getting to know others, it is also getting to know yourself better. This is a very fascinating and mind-opening process that can become the base for more happiness, satisfaction and mental as well as physical strength.
The bustling life in a big city like Jakarta makes it hard to experience Indonesian culture apart from expat communities and tourist tracks. Therefore, my Cultural Retreat in Jogja is meant to be a retreat in various ways: It is a vacation from everyday life in a big city, an expedition into authentic Indonesian culture as well as a journey that offers the chance to reflect on one´s individual time in Indonesia.
